Best Ways to Detect/Know An Original SD Card / Memory Card

Best Ways To Detect/Know An Original SD Card / MicroSD Memory Card - This serves and should be useful for your phone or any other gadgets that supports the use of SD cards.

If you think formatting a new or used SD card is the best way or method for checking the durability and authenticity of an SD card, sorry, you're very wrong because even fake memory cards can also allow formatting but the card will eventually fail at some point by totally getting its files or entire memory corrupt, or being too slow at handling data transfers when moving files/folders in or out of it.

It takes more measures to accurately detect if your memory SD card is legit and we'll reveal how you can do that in this post.

SanDisk Original SD Card

Is my Memory SD Card (MicroSD) Original?

I bought a SanDisk Memeory card for my Android phone, is the memory card genuine or original?

How do I know a genuine SanDisk, Memory card, Samsung (EVO, EVO Plus, Pro Plus), Kingston, MingsFord, V01 memory cards and others...

Whatever your questions are about finding out the authenticity of a memory card,

There are basically 3 types of memory cards.
  1. SD,
  2. SDHC
  3. and SDXC Memory Cards

Each of them has several classes, you can read more about them here

This guide below should help you know which is original or fake:

1. Download SD Insight  (from PlayStore for Android users)

The best way to know if an SD card is fake or genuine is to download SD Insight from the play store.

Launch the app and if the SD card is genuine it will show the name, manufacture date and capacity, just like the image below.
SD Insight Android App

2. Check for WRITE AND READ SPEED of the SD Card

To know the write and read speed, download A1 SD bench. It's one of the best benchmark app for memory cards.

If your SD class is Class 4 then it should write at average of 4MB/s, class 6 should write at 6MB/s, class 10 should be around 10MB/s. If your write speed is way off the class written on the SD card or as described in your SD Card's body or pack, then its probably fake.

How to get the new Gmail Redesign and Features

Of all Google apps, Gmail is updated less frequently, and even when it's updated, the changes are not that much. That has changed now as Google launched the biggest updates to Gmail some days ago. This includes some changes in the UI and a lot of changes in functionalities.

This article covers how you can start using the new Gmail right now, and the new features that come with it.

How to Enable the new Gmail

It's easy. Just click on the Settings icon in the top right corner of Gmail and select Try the new Gmail, follow the prompts and you're good to go.

Looking for a "Settings icon" in the top right corner of your Gmail mobile app? Oops, you won't find it. Most of these new features are only available on Gmail for the web, and only about two are ported over to the mobile app (the features available on mobile will be indicated below).

But should you try out the new Gmail? Is it worth it? Read through its new features below and decide ;)

PS: If you don't find the try option, relax. It's being rolled out gradually and not all Gmail users have received the option yet.

Features of the new Gmail

Floating Action Buttons

You no longer have to open your email to perform actions like Archive, Delete, Mark as Unread and Snooze. When you hover your mouse over an email, the buttons for these actions will appear and you can perform them right from your Inbox folder.

Of course, you can still perform these actions on an email while reading it. All except Snooze.

Wait, what the hell is Snooze?

Snooze Emails

Google has added the ability to snooze emails right from the inbox with the new snooze action button. You can choose the duration for which your emails are snoozed from a preset list ranging from Later in the Day to Some Day, or specify a date and time yourself.

Nudges and Smart Replies - Google AI

Google has incorporated some of its Artificial Intelligence into Gmail. The service now uses AI to determine if an email is important to you, and brings it back to the top of your inbox if you've not read or replied it after some time. This most times means all emails you haven't replied to.

Google has also brought over Smart Replies from the mobile app to the web. Smart Replies uses AI to present you with some reply phrases you might want to use to quickly answer a mail.

Confidential Mode

This mode prevents your recipient from forwarding, downloading, printing or copying/pasting the content of your mail. You can also set an expiry date for your emails.

If the email is that much of a security risk, you can add two-factor authentication and have your recipient provide a Google-generated passcode (sent via SMS) in order to read your message.

Unsubscribe from Newsletters

Once Google notices you haven't read a newsletter for a long time, it automatically suggests that you unsubscribe it. From there, you're just one tap away from unsubscribing. Not huge but useful for those of us who are subscribed to many newsletters and find it hell organizing our inbox as a result.

This is also available in an update to the Gmail mobile app, along with high-priority notifications (for the most important emails).

Integration with Google Apps

If you're neck-deep into the Google Apps ecosystem, the new Gmail takes you an inch deeper. It comes with a right sidebar that allows you to use other Google apps. It comes with Calendar, Keep and Tasks by default, but you can add other Google Apps as well as any Gmail add-on.

You can switch back to the old Gmail by following the same procedure that brought you to the new, though I'll have to ask what planet you are from if you choose to do that.

So, how do you feel about this Gmail revamp? Share your thoughts in the comments section.

Infinix Hot S3 vs Tecno Camon CX - Specs Comparison

The Tecno Camon CX received many accolades when it was launched by Tecno Mobile in 2017, thanks to its superb camera and software features. The Infinix Hot S3 was recently released into the Nigerian market, and one of its selling points is its Snapdragon processor that gives it a performance edge over similarly-specced MediaTek-powered smartphones in the market.

Even though Tecno Mobile launched a new device in the Camon series (Camon CM) early in 2018, it doesn't quite match up to the Camon CX, and the Camon X Pro that was recently launched by the company isn't available for sale yet, so the Camon CX might still be the goto Camon device for some, and this is why we're comparing it with the Hot S3 in this post.

Tecno Camon CX vs Infinix Hot S3

Also, if you're wondering whether it's a good idea upgrading from the Camon CX to the Hot S3, or you're having a hard time picking between the two camera-focused smartphones, this Infinix Hot S3 vs Tecno Camon CX comparison is here to guide you.

Infinix Hot S3 vs Tecno Camon CX - Similarities and Differences

Design & Display

The Camon CX was launched at a time when 18:9 aspect ratio and the word "bezel-less" didn't mean much in smartphones, and thus has a design that's quite 2017-ish, though still good-looking. The Hot S3, on the other hand, has a modern design with minimal bezels and an 18:9 aspect ratio. Design-wise the Hot S3 wins.

Tecno Camon CX vs Infinix Hot S3 - Display

The Camon CX excels when it comes to build quality, though; it has a metal unibody design that gives it a premium feel, unlike the Hot S3 that's made of plastic and has an aluminium alloy frame.

Coming to display, the Infinix Hot S3 is larger (5.7 inches) than the Tecno Camon CX (5.5 inches), but the difference in aspect ratio means the former is more comfortable to hold and use than the latter.

The Hot S3 disappoints in terms of display quality, as it comes with an HD+ (720 x 1,440) resolution in contrast to the Camon CX's Full HD (1,080 x 1,920) resolution. Considering that the Hot S3's display is larger than that of the Camon CX, the pixel resolution should have been bumped farther up.

Performance & Memory

The 1.5GHz MediaTek MT6750T processor on the Camon CX does a good job of keeping the smartphone running smoothly without lags throughout the day, but the Hot S3 has an edge with it Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 processor which offers better power efficiency and smoother performance, even though it runs at a slightly lower 1.4GHz maximum speed.

Multi-tasking is more efficient on the Hot S3 with 3GB of RAM compared to 2GB present on the Camon CX, and you have more space to store your files on the Infinix smartphone which comes with 32GB of storage than on the Tecno device that has 16GB by default.

Camera

The Infinix Hot S3 is selfie-centric, coming with a 20MP camera on the front and a 13MP on the rear. The Tecno Camon CX is more balanced, sporting 16MP cameras on both sides. Both produce good images in outdoor conditions, but the front camera on the Hot S3 performs better in low-light conditions while the Camon CX's rear camera outputs images with better clarity and less noise in low-light conditions.

Tecno Camon CX vs Infinix Hot S3 - Camera

The front camera on the Hot S3 can produce bokeh effects on selfies, a feature the Camon CX doesn't have. You also have Face ID and 4x zoom on the rear with the Hot S3, but the ring flash on the rear of the Tecno Camon CX beats that on the Infinix Hot S3.

Battery

The Hot S3 comes with a larger 4,000mAh battery capacity, but the absence of fast charging makes it take more time (around three hours) to charge than the 3,200mAh battery on the Camon CX which charges in a little less than two hours.

Software

Android 7.0 Nougat was the thing when the Camon CX was launched, but it hasn't been updated to the latest version of Android since. The Hot S3 runs on the latest Android 8.0 Oreo out of the box, sporting more features and software optimizations.

Tecno Camon CX vs Infinix Hot S3 - Software

The Infinix Hot S3 also comes with Face ID, an alternative way of unlocking your smartphone. Though it uses just the front camera and might not be very secure, it's an additional layer of security that the Camon CX doesn't have.

Conclusion

The Infinix Hot S3 has more features than the Camon CX, but that's understandable considering that both smartphones have a whole year between them. It also costs even less than the Camon CX was when it was launched, so it's a worthy upgrade if you're thinking of getting yourself one.

Tecno Camon X Pro Specs & Price: Super Selfies with 24MP Camera

Tecno launched two new smartphones in its Camon series early in April, and while we were expecting upgrades from last year's Camon devices in terms of camera, I'm not sure many were quite prepared for what Tecno came with; 24MP lens on a smartphone's camera. Say hi to the Tecno Camon X Pro.

Tecno Camon X Pro

Tecno launched its first smartphone of 2018, the Tecno Camon CM early in January, but it was apparent that it wasn't the flagship Camon device of the year as last year's Camon CX came with better specs. We speculated that it was a fore-runner sent to proclaim the bezel-less gospel, and were proven right when Tecno Mobile announced two more phones in the Camon series early in April.

The Tecno Camon X Pro is the higher variant of these and was announced alongside the Tecno Camon X, a device that shares its outward looks and many of its internal specs, but lags behind a  bit in the camera and memory departments.

TECNO CAMON X PRO SPECS

DISPLAY & DESIGN

  • 6-inch IPS LCD Display.
  • Full HD+ (1,080 * 2,160) Pixel Resolution.
  • ~350PPI Pixel Density.
  • 18:9 Aspect Ratio.
  • Fingerprint sensor.
The Tecno Camon X Pro might seem large with a 6-inch display, but its 18:9 aspect ratio with slim bezels means it's actually as comfortable to hold and use as a 5.5-inch device with the regular (16:9) aspect ratio.
Tecno Camon X Pro Display

The smartphone is not made of metal, but it's designed to look like it is from afar. Its frames are made of metal, though, and its antenna lines are made to give it a look close to premium. The Camon X Pro comes with a speaker and micro-USB port underneath, a fingerprint sensor on the rear with the camera and LED flash and a micro-USB port on top.

MEMORY & PERFORMANCE

  • 4GB RAM.
  • 64GB Internal Storage.
  • 2GHz 64-bit MediaTek Helio P23 (MT6763)
Multi-tasking is not an issue with the Camon X Pro, as its 4GB of RAM allows you to keep many apps in memory at the same time, and switch between them easily. With 64GB of storage available by default, you can store a lot of multimedia files. And if that's not enough, you can add 128GB of storage with an external microSD card.

The Tecno Camon X Pro is powered by a MediaTek Helio P23 processor that can operate at 2GHz at full speed, sufficient enough for all kinds of operations on a smartphone.

CAMERA

  • 24MP Front Camera with Dual-LED Flash.
  • 16MP Rear Camera with Quad-LED (Ring) Flash.
    • Autofocus.
    • 1080p@30fps Video Recording.
Remember when the Camon C9 was launched and everyone couldn't stop talking about how good its cameras were? Well, those were 13MP lens and last year's Camon CX was even better, so imagine how this new breed of Camon smartphones is on the photography front.

Tecno Camon X Pro Camera

The Tecno Camon X Pro captures superb selfies with its 24MP front camera, and you can even take selfies with bokeh effect. Your night shots won't be taking in a lot of noise, as you're covered with dual-LED flash on the front and quad-LED ring flash on the rear.

Talking about the rear, the Camon CX Pro sports a 16MP camera on the rear with support for 4X zoom.

BATTERY, CONNECTIVITY & SOFTWARE

  • 3,750mAh battery with fast charging.
  • 4G LTE.
  • Android 8.1 Oreo OS.
  • Tecno HiOS 3.0.
The Tecno Camon X Pro packs a 3,750mAh battery that can give you a full day of average use, and in case it runs down while you're using it heavily during the course of the day, you can quickly charge it back to 100% with its fast charging feature.

The smartphone has full support for 4G LTE and runs on the latest version of the Android operating system, Android 8.1 Oreo with Tecno's HiOS version 3.0 layered on top.

Tecno Camon X Pro FaceID

Still on software, the Camon X Pro comes with FaceID which allows you to unlock the smartphone using your facial details. Since this uses just the front camera, it shouldn't be relied upon as a trusted form of security, and it's better to stick to the rear-facing fingerprint scanner for securing the smartphone.

Tecno Camon X Pro Price and Availability

As at the time of publishing this post, only the Tecno Camon X is available in offline retail and online stores in Nigeria. This article will be updated once the Camon X Pro becomes available with the relevant price and purchase details.

How to scan documents with OCR on iOS

One of the updates brought by iOS 11 to Apple devices is a new feature in the Notes app which allows you to scan photos and physical documents so you can save them up just like your notes. This was a nice addition as it eliminates the need to install third-party applications just to perform that function, but it's still insufficient for those that want to go a step further and scan their documents with OCR as neither iOS or the Notes app support it natively. In this post, I'll show you how to scan documents with OCR in iOS.

Scan documents with OCR on iOS

Speaking in the context of smartphones, OCR (Optical Character Recognition) is a technology used to recognize text characters present on media files like documents and photos. The media files are first scanned and converted to a digital form suitable for character recognition, before the final process of OCR is carried out.

Special systems are designed to scan and recognize text on these files, but since many smartphones these days (definitely iOS devices) have cameras that are capable of taking clear and large pictures, applications can make use of both the cameras and software libraries available to carry out the process. In this guide, we'll be using Scanbot which is one of the best scanning applications available on the App Store.

Requirements

  • A device running on iOS.
  • Scanbot Pro. Even though Scanbot can be downloaded for free on the App Store, you have to upgrade to the pro version to get advanced tools like OCR. It's available via in-app purchases for $6.99.

Scanning documents with OCR on iOS - The Process

Launch the Scanbot app.

If it's your first time, you'll be taken straight to a camera interface where you'll be able to start scanning documents. To get there on subsequent launches, tap the + button on the main screen.

Scanbot Capture Screen

Scanning Multiple Documents

If you have more than one page of document you wish to scan, you can do it without having to keep exiting and returning to the capture screen. To do this, tap the Multi-Page option at the top left of the capture screen.

Scanning in dark environments

If you're in low-lit conditions, or you just want more clarity on the documents you're scanning, tap the Flash option at the top centre of the capture screen.

Automatic and Manual Scanning

The app's capture screen is just like your phone's camera application; you can tap the shutter button to scan a document. If you want this to happen automatically, however, tap the Automatic option at the top right of the capture screen.

You'll then have to position your device so that the page you wish to scan is completely in the camera's field of view and let the app do its thing.

When you're done with all the document pages you have, you can review your collection of images to see if you want to add more, delete some, or edit existing ones. When you've decided, tap the Save button to collate all the images into a PDF.

As long as you've upgraded to Scanbot Pro, OCR will be performed automatically on the document after it has been collated into PDF format.

Scan existing document with OCR

The steps above are for scanning a new document with OCR. If you want to scan an existing document with OCR on your iOS device, simply import the document into Scanbot through the Share Sheets action, switch to the Text tab at the top of the screen and tap Run OCR.
